Stop; Hammer Time!

Fall means Hammer Time here at the Ranch….No, we’re not talking about our dance moves, we’re talking about Hammer Museum’s annual Gala in the Garden, of course.

This year it was all about purple. We used over 2,000 hard-to-find purple dahlias to create this years modern look for sponsor, Bottega Veneta — that’s over 176 arrangements — oceans of purple!

Hammer 2013 Step 3 Dahlia

This was no easy feat, at the end of purple dahlia season. We contacted every dahlia grower on the west coast, endlessly searching for the perfect color, “purple fire.” Due to late September weather changes however, this particular dahlia was on it’s way out! We were left in the hands of Mother Nature.

Here’s a step-by-step glimpse at how we got the look!

We sincerely apologize to any floral designers that were in need of purple this week, as we shamelessly took all that were cut in Southern California!  We were seeing purple in our sleep for a few days after the event.

The event wouldn’t be complete without the trees of eucalyptus we create each year on the bars. Silver dollar eucalyptus, when perfectly sculpted, can truly look beautiful and refreshing.

Many of Hollywood’s elite came to celebrate this years amazing guests of honor, playwright Tony Kushner and artist Robert Gober. We hope they had a fabulous time!
